In 2012, the Alto 800 was relaunched with a new design and engine improvements. Since then, the car has sold around 45 lakh units, making it one of the most successful cars in India. According to the company, the Alto 800 also held the title of India’s best-selling car for 16 years.

The Alto 800 had a 796cc three-cylinder petrol engine, which generated 48PS of power and 69Nm of torque. Talking about mileage, the petrol version gave a mileage of 22.05 kmpl according to ARAI. At the same time, the CNG variant gave an excellent mileage of up to 31.59 km/kg. A 5-speed manual gearbox came standard with the Alto 800. This engine was known for its excellent performance and tremendous fuel efficiency at low cost.

Continuous improvement in design and features
Alto 800 has been a car with a simple but practical design. In its facelift version 2016 and 2019, the company gave a modern touch to the front grille, bumper, headlamps and taillights. Apart from this, features like dual tone interior, new seat fabric, digital instrument cluster and 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system were also added in the VXi + variant. In terms of safety, the company had made features like dual airbags, ABS, rear parking sensor and speed alert standard.
Maruti Alto 800 price and variants
Before being discontinued, the ex-showroom price of Alto 800 was between ₹ 3.54 lakh to ₹ 5.13 lakh. It was available in variants like STD, LXi, VXi and VXi +. CNG option was available in LXi (O) variant. The on-road price of Alto 800 used to start from ₹ 4 lakh and go up to ₹ 6 lakh in cities.
Demand for Alto 800 in second hand market
Even today, there is a tremendous demand for Alto 800 in the second hand car market. Due to its reliable performance, cheap maintenance cost and easy availability of spare parts, it is still considered the best option for those buying a first car. Used Alto 800 is easily available in the budget of ₹ 1 lakh to ₹ 3.5 lakh, which makes it an excellent option for people unable to buy a new car.
